The Midwest Judo Championships, a USA Judo Senior E-Level Point Tournament were held Saturday at the Hinkston Park Field House in Waukegan, Ill.
With six past National Champions in attendance as well as many top-five players, the event included many fights that may be revised at both next weekend’s New York Open and the Senior Nationals in April.
In the women's heavyweight division, Asma Sharif (Wakefield, Mass. /
Team FORCE) fought up from her usual 78kg division and upset the top two
ranked women in the United States at +78kg.
Sharif beat U.S. Open Bronze medalist Lorey Edwards (Columbus, Ohio / Renshuden) in the
preliminary rounds and then pinned top-ranked Brittni Bradford (San
Antonio, Texas / Universal Judo) in two separate matches to claim the
Gold medal.
In the Men's Heavyweight Division, Dan McCormick (Wakefield, Mass. /
Team FORCE) came into the tournament ranked #2 in the 100+kg division.
McCormick lost a first round battle to Anthony Turner (Miami Lakes, Fla.
/ Into Combat) getting thrown for ippon with tegaruma at the 3 minute
mark after leading the match yuko to koka on penalties. McCormick then won his
next two matches by Ippon setting up a match against #1 ranked Kirk
Hoffman (Security, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the
Olympic Training Center).
Hoffman took the early shido lead when
McCormick received a non-combativity penalty and then countered
McCormick for a yuko half way through the match.
McCormick came up big later on with a harai makikomi attack that sent Hoffman flying and
scored Ippon.
This set up a rematch with Turner for the title which Turner ended quickly, pinning McCormick for Ippon.
Dan had to settle for the silver.
German newcomer, Gerhard Zeitler (Wakefield, Mass/Team FORCE) typically
a 60kg player fought up here and contested the 66kg division where he
went 3-2 to claim the Bronze medal.
All of Zetiler's wins came by way
of Ippon and his only losses were to Josh O'Neil (Franklin, Wis. / USA
Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) who threw
Zeitler for Ippon in both of their matches.
